Local Government Pension Scheme introduction
The local government pension scheme (LGPS) has more than 6.1 million members nationally:
- contributors
- deferred members
- pensioners
There are 86 individual funds in England and Wales with assets running into billions of pounds.
It has members in:
- local government
- education from primary to higher
- police and fire staff
- the voluntary sector
- environment agencies
- private contractors
It is a statutory public service scheme. The scheme’s benefits and terms are set out in regulations passed through parliament.
Membership is automatic for nearly all eligible employees taken on before the age of 75, but you can opt out.
